Logan's Journey

Logan's Journey will be a long one, diagnosed with Hurler's Syndrome or MPS-1 he will have to go through numerous tests, then chemotherapy followed by a blood transplant. This site is dedicated to track his progress and keep everyone up to date on how he's doing and recovering.

Going home today

Today is the day. Logan will be released from the hospital anywhere from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. He'll still be on various medicines and have to go to the clinic everyday for a little bit but him being in a home environment not hooked up to an IV pole will be a nice change of pace.

Leaving the hospital on Thursday

Logan's still on track to go home on Thursday. As long as he doesn't need additional blood pressure medicine in addition to all the BP medicine he already gets, he's slated to go home Thursday afternoon. Infact, tomorrow we have to clear out his room and take everything down.

95% donor cells!

On Monday, they drew his blood to see how much of his blood had the donor cells. They tested three specific things geared towards his recovery and the most important thing they were looking at, the T-Cells, were 95% donor cells.

WBC back to above 2.0

His WBC made a jump today after two consecutive days of a pretty dramatic drop. It had originally gone from (basically) 3.0 to 2.0 to 1.0 but now it jumped back up to 2.2. The fluctuation of up and down is pretty common but if it had dropped again to around 0.5 the doctors said they may have been a little concerned about that.

Ornery and an insomniac

Sorry we haven't written in the last couple of days but it has been pretty busy around here. Mr. Logan has his schedule backwards, so he now sleeps during the day and is awake at night, that is, when he decides to sleep.

Same old stuff, different day.

Hey everyone, hope y'all are doing well. Logan thankfully is doing a little bit better everyday. Today he even let Grandma hold him, which was a pretty big deal. He still doesn't play or smile yet, but he's on his way there.

Logan is engrafted.

According to nurses, Logan has officially engrafted. This means they now believe that he can fight infection on his own and doesn't necessarily need to be in the clean unit anymore. Now, although it's different with every kid, their goal now is to ween him off of his constant medications and look to getting him discharged.

Checking the ANC's now.

His White Blood Count stayed the same today making it the third consecutive day above 0.5 so they are now looking at his ANC. Even better news is that his first ANC count came back at over 500, easily.

It's official: He's engrafting.

Well, Logan is doing about the same today. He is now officially engrafting (making white blood cells) and due to that he has bad bone pain which they say that Tylenol for some strange reason helps more than the heavier stuff.

Finally seeming to calm down

Logan seems to be doing much better. Yesterday was a nightmare - he would cry all the time he was awake, would only calm down when he was in a deep sleep but he would get so irritated that he couldn't get into a deep sleep.

Yet another hurdle in the path

Logan is still not doing very well right now. His breathing is very labored still, but not quite as bad as it was yesterday. However, now they're getting concerned about his kidneys.

Hopefully past the worst of it.

Things have actually made a turn for the better. While he is still on oxygen, he is no longer on the oxygen mask. He has the tube that goes across your face, with two tubes going a little bit into the nostrils. It's still giving him what he needs but it's not one giant contraption across his face, and it moves with him as well.

Bad night, good news.

Apparently Logan didn't do well last night. In addition to the fever he was running he also had problems breathing so right now he is connected to an oxygen tube. On the upside, his WBC hit .2 for the first time.

Signs of engraftment?

Well, today wasn't the best day for Logan. For the most part of the day he was running a low grade fever and cuddled with all of us. As the night progressed his fever spiked to 103 degrees. It got so bad that at one point he was shaking and we had to wrap him up in a blanket to get him warm.
